Abstract

|
Acute leukemia is not rare in adults of reproductive age. When one considers the
combination of leukemia and pregnancy, however, the incidence is low, less than one in
75,000 pregnancies. More than 300 pregnancies associated with acute leukemia have been
reported in the literatures.
With the advent of increasingly effective chemotherapeutic regimens, there has many
encouraging reports about the successful delivery of healthy babies in acute leukemia
and fetal safety of the chemotherapeutic agents.
We experienced a case of successful pregnancy in a 39-yr-old leukemic mother
diagnosed as acute myeloblastic leukemia at 28th gestational week. She was treated
with the so-called "TAD" regimen (6-Thioguanine, Cytosine arabinoside and
Doxorubicin). She delivered a healthy female baby, weighing 2.7 kg, spontaneously at
the 38th gestational week under the state of complete remission.
Unfortunately mother died of intracerebral hemorrhage at 7 months after delivery.
Baby is alive well for 9 months. Chromosomal study revealed normal. There was no
evidence of leukemia or gross congenital malformation.
